The PhantomMicrotech Gefell's new UM900 Professional Studio Condenser microphone is the first vacuum tube mike with 48 volt phantom powering. Using proprietary circuitry, the internal switching power supply generates voltages for the tube's plate and filament as well as the capsule polarizing voltage. Unlike traditional tube microphones, the "Phantom" needs no additional power supply box or multi-pair cable. The large diameter condenser pickup is the famed M7 capsule mounted in an unusually large 75mm diameter headgrill. The headgrill shape differs from the usual cylinder- or wedge-shaped grills which is an important design element in shaping the sound of this microphone. The tonal character is distinctly different from Gefell's other tube mike, the very popular UM 92.1S. The "Phantom" excels at a large variety of applications ranging from close-up miking of solo vocals to overall pickup of an entire orchestra. The mike features 5 pickup patterns: omni, figure 8, cardioid, wide cardioid and hyper cardioid. |
