Large-Capsule Studio Mic Ask any home or project studio owner what they really need and they'll tell you they'd like a larger variety of high-quality microphones. Traditionally, such mics have been very expensive, most of them Enter the Audix CX-101 and CX-111 large-diaphragm studio condenser microphones. The CX-101 is a true large-capsule condenser designed to offer unmatched performance and a price that any studio can afford. Rather than designing a mic that tries to be all things to all people, Audix engineers decided that producing a simple and elegant design for a solid, reliable warm-sounding single pattern cardioid condenser would fill the need of thousands of studios ready to improve their sound. The CX-101 has a one-inch gold vapor diaphragm and a very low noise floor of 17 dB(A), making it one of the quietest condensers on the market. It features a rugged brass housing and the Audix trademark black satin finish. Operation requires phantom power of 48 to 52 volts. According to Audix Vice President of Sales Cliff Castle, "We have had market demand for a large-diaphragm vocal microphone for quite some time now. The CX-101 is the first in a series of condenser microphones with exceptional performance at a great price. We have had a wide variety of studio and live sound engineers beta testing this mic and the results have been quite impressive. We anticipate a strong demand for this product for both studio and live broadcast applications. We're aiming not only at the home and project studios ready to upgrade their mics, but also at larger studios that never have enough good-sounding, large-capsule mics." In addition to the many applications for such a microphone, including vocals, acoustic instruments, woodwinds and reeds, the CX-101 will also perform well in selected live professional applications that require the transparency that only a large-capsule condenser delivers. The CX-111 utilizes an identical capsule but is equipped with a -10 dB pad and a bass roll-off switch. The CX-101 is available from authorized Audix dealers at a suggested retail price of $499 (US); the CX-111 is available at the suggested retail price of $599 (US). Both mics come equipped with a shock-mount stand adapter and a sturdy aluminum carrying case. A 2-channel phantom power supply is an optional accessory available for either model.
