ALL-MAPLE or ALL-BIRCH (horizontal grain) For years, drum makers have preferred maple and birch for their resonant tonal qualities. Maple is a traditional shell material that provides low-end punch, warmth, and attack. Available with or without 3-ply reinforcement hoops in a variety of grain configurations, DW custom shop maple shells are more versatile and customizable than ever before. Toms 8-13" are 6-ply, while 14" and bigger are 7-ply. Bass drums are 7-ply and snare drums are 10-ply (with 6-ply reinforcement hoops). DW Custom Shop standard birch shells come without reinforcement hoops and provide a bright, high-end fundamental that many drummers prefer. All birch shells are 8-ply except for 8" toms which are 7-ply. Standard shells come standard with a short grain inner ply to provide added-low end. All available SSC shell options can also be custom ordered.
MAPLE & MAHOGANY Our newest shell offering is designed to give drummers the best of both worlds, the warmth of vintage drums and the resonance and projection of our state-of-the-art Custom Shop Collector's Series™. The shells feature North American Hard Rock Maple and African Mahogany construction, combined with VLT (Vertical Low Timbre) shell technology. VLT™ (Vertical Low Timbre) In experimenting with different exotic woods as alternate shell making materials, DW's Custom Shell Shop discovered that in addition to the different tonal qualities inherent in every unique type of wood, slight alterations in the shell's construction can also greatly influence sound. Some of the woods sampled possessed a vertical grain pattern that when tested, dramatically lowered the pitch of the shell. Thus, VLT (Vertical Low Timbre) was born. For those players who prefer a lower overall tone while still maintaining maximum resonance and attack, VLT can be ordered as an option on all Collector's Series Maple Drums. VLT consists of arranging the grain pattern of the plies in the shell so the outermost and innermost plies run vertically, and not the traditional horizontal. The vertical grain places less tension on the shell, allowing it to vibrate more freely, resulting in the lowered fundamental pitch. BUILT-IN-BOTTOM™ So, what's the difference between VLT and Built-In Bottom? In a nutshell, the optional VLT feature utilizes vertical plies on the inside and outside of the shell, while Built-In Bottom only has vertical plies inside the shell. It provides a more low-end response. While optional on all Collector's Series drums, Built-In Bottom comes standard on Collector's Series bass drums and tom-toms 14" and greater to add the desired low end for these size shells(14"-24").
X-SHELLS™ Making drums sound better, at DW it's what we do best. So what exactly is X Shell technology and how does it work? It all started with our foray into VLT™, or Vertical Low Timbre Technology. We found that in experimenting with alternate ways to cross-laminate a shell, the tension on the shell could be greatly decreased if the majority of plies were run vertically, rather than horizontally. Just like a guitar string, the tighter it gets, the higher in pitch it goes. Shells must be cross-laminated for strength, so the idea of designing a completely vertical shell to achieve optimal low frequencies was never an option. Until now. Enter X Shells. The concept was derived from our popular line of VGE (Vertical Grain Exotics). Sure, we had been laminating veneer in a diagonal orientation for a while, but had never considered the sonic benefits until Master Drum Designer John Good proposed it, "If we can mimic the effect of a complete VLT shell, we'll have created the lowest sounding drum ever." The first prototype was made and the result was a home run. Exactly what Mr. Good had anticipated, big, full sounding drums with a huge fundamental, and all of the warmth, resonance and attack that Collector's Series drums are known for. X Shells are crafted from hand-selected North American Hard Rock Maple in an 8-ply configuration with a 3-ply finger-jointed reinforcement hoop. The shells can be custom ordered in any Collector's Series size, finish, drum hardware color or factory option. It's a giant leap forward in shell technology and everyone wins! VLX Vertical Low Timbre/Diagonal grain shells are the lowest grain orientation available from the DW Custom Shop. As a result, they are suggested for bass drums and larger floor toms. Of the 8 plies that make up a VLX shell, 6 are diagonal or X and 2 are vertical or short grain. When ordering a factory SSC configuration, all bass drums, 16" & 18" floor toms will be made as VLX. Counter Hoops Steel Triple Flange Hoops come in graduated weights (1.6mm for 8 & 10" toms and 2.3mm for 12-18" toms and snares). They come standard on Performance Series drums and are available in chrome only. Our alloy Die-Cast Hoops come standard on all Jazz Shells drums and are optional on all other Custom Shop drums. Their stout construction and added weight naturally reduce resonance and provide an alternate tonal qualities. Toms are available in chrome only and snares are offered in chrome and 24 karat gold.

To make a better instrument, sometimes you have to go back to the basics. We spent nearly a year-and-a-half designing and perfecting the most consistent counter hoop we’ve ever produced. It’s called the True Hoop and it’s a major advancement in the relationship between bearing edge, drum head and counter hoop. As drummers, we know how critical that relationship is to tuning and tone. The True Hoop is just that, round and flat, and without the typical variations you often see around stamped holes. It even has an attractive new touch: a fully-rounded outer edge. They now come factory installed on all Collector’s Series Drums and are available in all drum hardware color options. True Hoops are also gauged in graduated thicknesses to factory-match

STM™ - Suspension Tom Mount
DW’s patented STM™ (suspension tom mount) system allows drums to vibrate freely, allowing maximum resonance while securely holding the drum in place. Because there are no washers or grommets inhibiting the lug rod receiver, choking is reduced and tuning is as easy as ever. (U.S. Patent #5520083)

Hardware Colors DW Drums are available in five distinct hardware color options; Chrome, Satin Chrome, Black Nickel, Black Chrome, and 24 Karat Gold. This includes lugs, hoops, STM™, and tom legs. Keep in mind, our stands are available in Chrome and 24 Karat Gold.

DW Snare Throw-off Systems DW offers 2 styles of snare throw-offs; Traditional Delta ball-bearing throw-off and all new MAG™ throw-off. A purposefully simple design, the MAG™ is a workhorse drop throw-off with horizontal tension adjustment and smooth, easy-adjust action. It gets its name from a clever magnet that's integrated into the body of the throw-off. When the handle is in the up position, it won’t release without a slight tug. When it does release it throws the strainer completely off the head to avoid any strainer buzz. The innovative new 3P, three-position butt plate, allows you to easily and accurately toggle between 3 different levels of strainer tension. The combination of the MAG™ throw-off and the 3P Butt Plate is the most reliable and adjustable strainer system we've ever built. BDM - Bass Drum Mount DW offers the Slide Track BDM and Vintage-Style Rail Mount. The Slide Track BDM is available in Single and Double tom configurations and in Chrome, Satin Chrome, Black Nickel, Black Chrome, and 24 Karat Gold finishes. The Rail Mount is available in Single tom configuration and Chrome. No need to lug around extra tom stands! These mounts have been engenieerd to have the least possible stress and sonic effect on your bass drum. No more huge holes in the top of your precious drum

Tom Legs DW is happy to offer a variety of lengths and metals for floor tom legs to suit your artistic tastes. Our standard Steel 21" and 25" legs as well as our light Aluminum 21" and 27" legs are available in the same colors as our lugs (Chrome, Satin Chrome, Black Nickel, Black Chrome, and 24 Karat Gold). We also developed the Fine Tune Floor Tom Leg as a convenient and easy way to adjust the resonance of any DW floor tom with leg brackets. Simply adjust the knurled knob above the leg to have less resonance when touching the floor and more resonance when off the floor. It's Chrome plated and made of Steel. True-Pitch® Tuning Rods To give drummers even more control over their sound, DW created its patented True-Pitch® rod system. The rods feature 5mm threads rather than the 12/24 that’s standard on most other drums. To compare, there is 1 thread every 0.8mm on our True-Pitch® rods (about 20% more threads), versus 1 thread every 1.05mm on most other drums. The result is a more exacting tuning process. Tom Heads DW Coated/Clear heads by Remo USA come standard on all DW drums and incorporate a coated tone ring for just the right amount of muffling with plenty of resonance. Crimped flesh hoops provide maximum vibration and durability. (U.S. Patent #5920021) New DW Clear Edge heads by Remo USA are optional on all DW drums and feature a coated surface for darker tone with more attack for drummers who prefer a coated-style head. The heads also have a patented clear edge near the crimped hoop to maximize resonance and sustain at the bearing edge. (U.S. Patent #5920021)
